Educational guarantee for Azizul
WORLD No 1 keirin rider Azizul Hasni Awang's future is secure, so long as the 21-year-old doesn't lose focus on the medal target at the 2012 Olympic Games. Azizul, who won the historic silver medal in the 200m sprint at the World Championships last month, will be enrolled to pursue a degree in Sports Management at Deakin University in Melbourne, where he is based, fully funded by the National Sports Council (NSC).NSC director general Datuk Zolkples Embong said the offer had been approved by previous Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob."This is to ensure that Azizul secures what he needs for his long term future, but at the same time it should not disrupt his focus on the 2012 target," said Zolkples. The academic programme, said Zolkples, is being arranged by national head coach John Beasley, who will also monitor Azizul's academic progress.

He added that Azizul, who this week began his training regime in preparation for the new season that starts in October, will have a flexible regime as far as his academic pursuit is concerned."He has full support of what he needs in order for him to keep performing on the track," said Zolkples. New Sports Minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek also had a lunch meeting with Azizul yesterday during which he was briefed on the pint-sized sprinter's programme."I am excited as the academic programme will help me after my cycling career is over," said Azizul."I will only look at it when I get back to Melbourne. I still have not discussed it all with John, as he's still on holiday." -- ARNAZ M. KHAIRUL
